"And O-U-T spells OUT". Counting-out rhymes are often relics of tribal mumbo-jumbo, magical rites like casting lots. Sometimes they imitate numerals of forgotten languages.

I always feel a tinge of sadness when I see old photos like this. Especially with kids in them. Any girl still alive here will be in their seventies now, maybe nudging 80. They might just be able to remember the end of the war. As for the girls themselves as portrayed, well, they've been 'dead' for a long time now.
And regarding, "...tribal mumbo-jumbo, magical rites like casting lots. Sometimes they imitate numerals of forgotten languages.", what absolute tosh. Journalism hasn't changed as much over the years as some people like to say it has, if that quote is anything to go by.
