This appears to be the famous "wigan Pier", though the Leeds and Liverpool Canal now caters only for leasure traffic the "Pier" still remains. Much has change around this area,nearby the old company terminal building housing an unloading dock and warehouse is now a restaurant and pub. On the opposite bank from the Trencherfield Mills there is a dry dock which is still in use today.

As may be seen from the photograph the "pier" was used to end tip railway wagons of coal into canal barges.
