Gunmen, resisting arrest, had barricaded themselves in 100, Sidney Street, and opened fire at the police. A detachment of Scots Guards and several hundred armed police were called out to capture them. Mr. Winston Churchill, the Home Secretary, seen in the photograph directed operations.
